Srebotnik defeats Elena

With the top 3 seeds out, the Tokyo tournament will be rememberd as the underdog tournament. Katarina Srebotnik was the person to beat Elena. Since the last 3 years Srebotnik always was a tough opponent for Dementieva. And this time aswell. Having won their previous match in Zurich with 2 straight sets, Katarina had nothing to loose. She won with breaks on and off:6-3 6-4. We'll see Elena back in Stuttgart in 10 days.
 

Cornet no match for Elena

In about an hour Elena shook off French girl Alize Cornet: 6-0 6-3. With this win she earned herself a ticket to the year-ending-tournament in Doha. She will be the fifth player to join Ivanovic, Jankovic, Williams and Safina. Elena said: "A couple of years ago I had to fight till the end to earn a spot. Now I'm already there which is great!" Her next opponent in the quaterfinals will be either Schiavone or Srebotnik.

It has been 4 years ago that Elena has been this high in the WTA rankings. There was a possibility to be ranked number 1 in the world, but in order to do that Elena had to win the tournament. However Serena won the US Open, so she became the number 1. While Jankovic is now at second place en Ivanovic at third. It's still a pretty tight situation on top, so hopes are still alive to see Elena become number 1 this season.

This is the third time Elena's US Open run ends in the semi-final. This time she was beaten by Serbian Jelena Jankovic. Elena began very strong with 4-2 but then Jelena came back, winning the next 4 games in a row. In the second set Elena also got a better start, but with the score 4-all Jelena kept her serve and broke Elena in the next game. This ends her winning streak at 12 matches. Elena was proud to have this amazing run.
